Dear 503 Community:

Friday night the Kansas House and Senate approved a bill which all parties believe will meet the Supreme Court's equity test. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit have stipulated to the Court their support, and the Governor has said he will sign the bill. Therefore, we will not have to put into place the measures previously reported by the Sun regarding contingencies in the event of a shutdown.

This has been a stressful time for all involved, and I extend to you my sincere thanks for your support of our public schools and willingness to hang in there with us while the Legislature worked through the process. Most of the gains for our district with this equity fix will come in the form of property tax relief, rather than additional spending authority. That will be of help to our community.

The best news is that our students can continue with summer school, summer sports and conditioning camps, and to have access to summer meals. Parents won't have to worry about additional day care to ensure their children's safety. The energy conservation and maintenance work that is so vital may continue, and we will be ready for our All-District enrollment on August 2nd.

I hope you all enjoy the rest of your summer and we look forward to welcoming everyone back this fall for the 2016-17 school year.

It's a great time to be a Viking!
