ELEMENTARY PROJECTS
The elementary schools
held
groundbreaking ceremonies on November 22, 2005. The Bond Campaign
Committee
Co-Chairs, Dr. Wayne Gilmore and Mrs. Jackie Payne, four student
representatives from each school, PBA Architects Corey Schultz and
Shauna Boor,
as well as current Board of Education members participated in the
ceremonies.
At each school, the students and staff came outside to watch the
ceremonies.
Each school’s mascot was on hand, as were many parents, community
members, the
Chamber of Commerce board of directors and Jordan Irwin of General
Service
Corporation, the General Contractor for the projects. Dr. Perbeck,
Superintendent and Rob Emery, Chamber of Commerce President spoke to
the crowd
prior to the ground breaking. It was an exciting time for everyone
involved!
Work has already begun at the schools. Garfield
and Lincoln
received temporary exits and the ground is being prepared at Lincoln to
begin
the construction of three new classrooms. Garfield will have a new
media center
constructed and much interior renovation to the existing boiler room,
restrooms, and flooring throughout the building. Guthridge will add two
new
classrooms and two small group rooms built on to the north side of the
building
and have flooring replaced throughout the building, too. Lincoln and
Garfield’s
new additions will be constructed to serve a dual purpose of student
space and
tornado shelters for the school and community. Completion of the
elementary
projects is scheduled for August 1, 2006.
HIGH
SCHOOL PROJECT
The high school is a
much more
comprehensive project and includes new construction of a media center,
auditorium, gymnasium, track, and at least six new classrooms. The
four-classroom annex will be removed. The cafeteria will be expanded,
and the
Printing/Auto Shop building will be remodeled. Extensive renovation to
the
interior of the main building will include new restrooms on second
floor;
classrooms will be enlarged; Student Services will be moved to the new
main
entrance; and, the existing auditorium space will be converted into a
large
classroom/Community Room with a concessions area. Additional on-campus
parking
will also be added east of the new construction.
The high school design phase is almost completed.
A special
Board of Education meeting is scheduled for December 12, 2005 to
finalize the
plans and determine alternates to the project. The anticipated date to
let bids
is early January, with bid opening in min-February 2006.
