INTRODUCTION TO ART

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
The student wanting to be more aware of the vast influence art has on
life, the serious art student providing him/herself with a basis for
future art classes, the college bound student desiring a general
understanding of art concepts, and the student who wishes to explore
his/her own creative abilities will benefit from this fundamental
course.
This class is a prerequisite to Drawing, Painting, Printmaking,
Textiles, and Ceramics. The first half of the course will be
devoted to drawing skills. Students enrolled in this course will be
expected to execute drawings in each of the following: Basic Abstract
Design; Contour Lines; Realism; Portrait; and Experimental
Drawing. Students will use charcoal, charcoal pencil, colored
chalk, pencil, pen and ink, and ink wash as drawing media.
The second half of the course will be concerned with the importance of
color not only in art works but in the total environment. Two
painting media will be used; opaque tempera and watercolor pencils.
Students will study the color wheel, the color harmonies and the mixing
of colors using tempera paint. Using watercolor pencils, the students
will study major techniques.

ADVANCED ART |

Grade: 11, 12
Advanced art is designed for the student who has a background in art
and is able to work independently to further develop skills in one or
more areas. The class MAY BE

CERAMICS I

Prerequisite: Introduction
to Art with a grade of “C” or better.
Grade: 10, 11, 12
Students enrolled in this course will be expected to execute assigned
construction techniques and decoration methods commonly used in the
making of ceramic pottery and sculpture. Six major pottery pieces
and two ceramic sculptures will be required. This is a time
consuming, messy art course requiring daily handling of the clay and
good use of class time. Students
must pay a $20.00 lab fee to cover the cost of clay and glaze

ADVANCED CERAMICS |

Prerequisite: Ceramics
with an “A” or permission of the instructor.
Grade: 10, 11, 12
Students enrolled in this class will be expected to execute assigned
construction and decoration techniques used in the making of ceramic
pottery and sculpture. They will be expected to produce ceramic
works of greater size and difficulty than they were able to in Ceramics
I, and with a higher level of quality and personal expression.
Six major pottery pieces and two ceramic sculptures will be required. Students must pay a $20.00 lab
fee to cover the cost of clay and glaze. THIS CLASS MAY BE TAKEN MORE
THAN ONCE.

PRINTMAKING AND CALLIGRAPHY

Prerequisite: Intro
to Art with a grade of “C” or better.
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12
First nine weeks: Two relief printmaking techniques, wood cut and
linoleum cut will be studied. Two major editions of a wood cut,
one black and white and one color, will be required as well as one
black and white edition of a linoleum cut. The course will not
only cover the physical aspect of cutting, inking and printing the
blocks, but also the technical terminology involved in working with
this art form.
Students will provide a 9”x12” block of soft wood, an apron, and
gloves, if desired. Printmaking is a messy art course.
Second nine weeks: Calligraphy (lettering). Students will
be required to learn the uses of lettering pens and ink in the study of
the following alphabets: Roundhand, Chancery, and Gothic
Blackletter. In addition to specific alphabet assignments, the
students will be required to letter a quotation of at least two lines
in length. The student may select a quote and the alphabet of his
choice for this final project.

DRAWING I

B, or C in Introduction to Art.
Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
This course will allow students to review drawing styles and materials
and to further develop their drawing skills. A desire to learn
more about drawing and to improve one’s ability to draw is
essential. Pencil will be the major material used as well as ink,
colored pencil, chalk, and charcoal. Students will review drawing
styles, develop greater understanding of perspective, practice drawing
portraits, work on a graphic creation or advertisement, and work with
textures in drawing landscape and still life drawing.

ADVANCED DRAWING

Grade: 10, 11, 12
This is a course for the student who truly enjoys drawing and wants to
make a serious effort to develop his/her skills. Emphasis will be
placed on originality and the ability to creatively use drawing skills
to demonstrate personal ideas and expression. Students will be
exposed to drawing human figures along with continued exposure to
drawing portraits, landscapes, and still life. THIS CLASS MAY BE TAKEN MORE THAN ONCE

For the student who is interested in painting and learning more about
the use of color. The color harmonies and the feelings of various
colors will be reviewed; the history of painting, work of various
successful painters, and several painting materials will be
explored. Tempera, watercolor, and acrylic painting will be
used. Students will learn to correctly matt a work of art

ADVANCED PAINTING

This is a course for the student who is seriously interested in
painting as a medium of expression and wants to develop more skill in
using various materials for communication. Not only will students
be working in watercolor, tempera, and acrylic, but they will research
the work of various famous painters. One written report will be
required. Students will gain a greater understanding of painting
along with acquiring more personal skill. THIS CLASS MAY BE TAKEN MORE THAN ONCE
