This course is designed to develop a better understanding of business
activities, business forms, asset, liability and owner’s equity
accounts. Financial transactions will be analyzed, journalized
and posted, and financial statements will be prepared. Accuracy,
neatness, and responsibility, in relationship to maintaining a set of
books for a business, will be emphasized. Students will complete
an accounting simulation manually and on a computer. Ten-key
calculators will be used where applicable, and spreadsheet activities
will be processed using Peachtree Accounting and Excel 2000 on the
computer

KEYBOARDING AND INFORMATION PROCESSING

KEYBOARDING AND INFORMATION PROCESSING is designed to develop the basic
“touch” typing skill that is vital for use with the computer keyboard,
including number and symbol keys. The student will learn the computer
for their personal use and how to format documents for their high
school classes. Students will learn to type the following: business and
personal letters, simplified memorandums, centered announcements,
outlines, and short reports. Emphasis will be placed on the application
of proofreading skills, and typing from rough draft copy. Keyboarding
and Information Processing is a prerequisite for all other computer
courses. The instruction will be on MICROSOFT WORD XP. Students are
expected to supply a half ream of computer paper.

WORD PROCESSING should be taken by students following KEYBOARDING AND
INFORMATION PROCESSING to prepare them for our computer world today. In
this class, students will improve their keyboarding skills, and learn
advanced word processing using MICROSOFT WORD on a PC computer.
Students will learn the modern trends in typing the following: term
papers, outlines, columns and table formatting, job application letter
and resume, and business forms. The student should end the semester
with a minimum typing speed of 40 words per minute. Students are
expected to provide their own computer paper. This class is a prerequisite for
Computer Applications I and II, Office Procedures, and Business and
Computer Technology (IHT). Word processing and Computer Applications
I are the Kansas Board of Regents required computer technology
courses for admission into a state college and to qualify for state
scholarships.

APPLICATIONS I

Grade: 10, 11, 12
Students will study how a computer is used in
business, school, and everyday life. Basic knowledge of the
Windows operating system will be taught. Students will develop
their skills in word processing, database management, spreadsheets,
graphics and desktop publishing using Microsoft Word and Excel which
are components of the software package Microsoft Office. This
course will prepare students to use computers for their own benefit and
give them important job qualifications. In addition, work place
skills will be emphasized including the ability to set priorities, meet
deadlines, proofread, file correctly, and manage time. Students
must supply 1 ream (500 sheets) of computer paper. Word Processing and Computer Applications
I are the Kansas Board of Regents required computer technology courses
for admission to a state college and to qualify for state scholarships.

This course is designed to prepare students to use advanced
technology. Students will work with a variety of application
software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, and
Adobe PageMaker. In-depth applications on word processing,
spreadsheets, database management, and integration of files, desktop
publishing and graphics will be completed. In addition, workplace
skills including the ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, manage
time and accept change will be emphasized. Concurrent LCC college credit is available
for students in grades 11 and 12.

OFFICE TECHNOLOGY
is designed to give students interested in working in an office an
opportunity to practice and develop skills on office machines.
Activities will include: transcribing; computerized filing; preparing a
personnel file; role–playing receptionist and telephone techniques; and
operating a transcriber; electronic memory typewriter, ten-key
calculator, copying equipment and computer. The most popular software
used in business today— Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher will be
learned. Students must supply their own computer paper.

BUSINESS & COMPUTER
TECHNOLOGY (IN–HOUSE TRAINING) is an office simulation class
that will operate as a business, not a classroom. The students will
work as employees and the instructor will serve as the employer. The
goal of the class is to provide the senior business students an
opportunity to apply their computer and business skills to real “live”
work. The “live” work will consist of newsletters, mail merges, mailing
labels, scholarships, scanning, banners, digital camera, posters, and
computer maintenance. These jobs are contracted by Parsons’
businesses, local offices, and community organizations. The student
will use both the PC and Macintosh computers to produce the contracted
jobs.

principles of everyday law. Topics that will be covered include
ethics, criminal law, tort law, laws affecting minors, entering into
contracts, marriage and divorce, and consumer law. Knowing more
about the law can help students avoid legal conflicts in their
professional and personal lives

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Grade: 11, 12
This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental
principles of business in their role as a consumer, citizen, and
employee. It provides the knowledge necessary for the individual to
conduct their own personal business affairs. Students will study
economics, banking services, budgeting and managing money, investing,
using credit wisely, and developing good consumer skills. The student
will also explore his/her interests and abilities and match them to
various occupations. Students will expand skills that will heighten
their employability such as resume writing, applying and interviewing
for jobs, team building techniques, creating a business plan and
leadership experiences.
Entrepreneurship is a
prerequisite for Community Service and COT.
