4600/4601 SPANISH I
Y
Prerequisite: “C” or better in English.
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12
Spanish I provides a foundation for the development of audio–lingual, reading, and writing skills in the Spanish language.  Emphasis is placed on understanding simple conversations, learning basic vocabulary, understanding and being able to answer simple questions in the language. The present and present progressive tenses are presented.





4610 SPANISH II

Prerequisite: Spanish I with a “B” average or better.
Grade: 10, 11, 12
Spanish II is a continuation of Spanish I and stresses a further development of audio–lingual, reading, and writing skills.  More difficult conversations and questions are introduced, and speech patterns become more established. An appreciation for spoken Spanish is cultivated and difficult grammar constructions are learned.  The preterit tense is presented, and an introductory treatment of the subjunctive mood is given.   





4620 •SPANISH III

Prerequisite: "B" in Spanish II. 
Grade: 11, 12
In this course students study all of the linguistic structures of the Spanish language. Vocabulary study is greatly enhanced and the language is used to study about the people and places where Spanish is spoken. This is a college prep class and is taught almost exclusively in the language itself. Upon completion of this course students should be prepared to take intermediate and upper level college Spanish classes





4630 • SPANISH IV
Y
Prerequisite: "B" in Spanish III. 
Grade: 12
This course reviews and reinforces all the structural linguistic patterns that are studied in Spanish I, II, and III.  Students use the language to communicate on a more advanced level and to read literary and cultural selections in Spanish.  Upon successfully completing this course the student will be well prepared for the upper level Spanish classes.





4500   FRENCH I

Prerequisite:  “C” or better in English.
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12
This is an introductory class in basic French stressing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.  Students will learn how to communicate using common expressions in everyday situations.  The main goal is to give the student the ability to use nouns and adjectives, form and answer questions and to talk on a number of subjects using the present tense.  They also learn to talk about the immediate future and events which took place in the past.  A basic practical vocabulary is studied at this level.  Cultural information is incorporated into each unit.





4510   FRENCH II
Y
Prerequisite:  “B” in French I or permission of the instructor.
Grade: 10, 11, 12
French II is a continuation of French I with more emphasis being placed upon the reading and writing skills.  This class is taught almost entirely in the French language.  More complex language patterns are introduced and basic vocabulary is greatly expanded.  The language itself is used extensively to study about French culture.  Upon successful completion of this course the student will be familiar with all of the basic communication patterns of the French language.





4520 •  FRENCH III

Prerequisite:  “B” or better in French II or permission of the instructor.
Grade:  11 or 12
This course is a continuation and reinforcement of French I and French II.  There is an increased emphasis on using the French language to study French civilization and culture.  At this level students study the two verb tenses, which are strictly literary in usage.  This course is comparable to an intermediate level college French course.





4525 •  FRENCH IV
Y
Prerequisite:  “B” or better in French III or permission of the instructor.
Grade: 12
This course is a review and reinforcement of all the structural linguistic pattern and vocabulary that are studied in French I, II and III.  Students will communicate in French on a more advanced level and will use the language to read literary and cultural selections in French.  Upon successfully completing this course, the student will be well prepared for intermediate and advanced college French classes.  This class will usually be offered concurrently with French III but students will be held to a higher standard.
