HEALTH SCIENCE EXPLORATION (1HOUR)

Application to Parsons Health Science Academy and acceptance and
concurrent enrollment in Health Science Biology.

Health Science Exploration is designed to introduce the student to
those health care issues and process that af-fect patients in all
settings and are universal to all health care providers. Topics
include health care, therapeutic communication and interpersonal
skills, cultural and ethnic diversity, legal issues, healthcare
delivery models and settings, employability skills, health and safety
practices. Students will gain an awareness of and have the
opportu-nities to explore various health professions including
diagnostic, therapeutic, support services, health informatics, and
biotechnology through guest speakers, field trips, and job shadowing
experiences. Also included are leadership skills developed
through membership in the student youth organization, HOSA and
introduction to Spanish medical phrases.
The curriculum will include traditional classroom style of learning
along with rigorous team work activities in solving problems that are
relevant to the health science field. This team work
provides students with real life situa-tions that involve complex
thinking skills as well as problem solving skills. 1 credit.

Science Explorations or concurrent enrollment in Health Science
Explorations, and concurrent enrollment in Anatomy and Physiology

Health Science I is designed to acquaint the student with the
many career opportunities in the health care field, health care
systems, qualities of a successful health care worker, medical ethics
and legal responsibilities, medical terminology, communication,
nutrition and health, human growth and development, cultural diversity,
infection con-trol, and job-seeking skills. Students will develop
a basic understanding of body systems. This course is also
de-signed to provide skills to perform CPR and first aid
procedures. The student will receive certification in CPR upon
successful completion of all American Heart Association standards for
Basic Life Saving for the Health Care Pro-vider.
The curriculum which combines classroom and laboratory instruction
emphasis on defining the role and respon-sibility of members of the
health care team, developing, expanding and refining competencies to
prepare the student for employment and/or further education as well as
promoting within the student a realistic self-perception of abili-ties,
interest and goals as they relate to his/her career objective. This
course offers the student the option of a con-current credit class in
Medical Terminology from Labette Community College for 3 hours of
credit. Also included are leadership skills developed
through membership in the student youth organization, HOSA. 1 credit.

HEALTH SCIENCE II (2 HOURS)

Science I, grade “C” or better and permission of instructors.
Grade: 12
Students will learn to process knowledge of self, the work environment
and nursing skills into the manpower requirements of a health care
worker. Students will describe basic anatomy, physiology,
terminology, and demon-strate the skills needed to perform in the
nursing assistant role. Students will participate in the direct
care, with su-pervision to gain confidence in the nursing assistant
duties. This course provides classroom and clinical instruction for the
primary care of clients in long-term and acute-care facilities.
Students learn skills for daily hygiene, bedside care, vital sign
measurement, positioning, and safe transfer of clients. The class
prepares and schedules the student to take the Kansas CNA
examination. This course offers the students a concurrent credit
class in preparation for certification in Nursing Assisting from
Labette Community College for 6 hours of credit. In addition this
course will include a healthy living unit, preparation for becoming
employed, and field trip experience. 1 credit.

Students in Health Science III have the opportunity to explore health
career options and learn from the profes-sionals in many different
areas. Students will shadow health professionals as well as go on
field trips to different medical facilities. The class prepares
students to become more marketable for a job in health
careers. Students will have an opportunity to practice and
improve basic care skills. Students have an opportunity to
demonstrate team-work skills, develop group projects as well as learn
from each other about health topics that appear in papers and
journals. Also included are leadership skills developed through
membership in the student youth organization, HOSA. Students will
have the opportunity of several field trips of which some will include
visits to post secondary institutions. 1 credit

Grade: 12
Students in Health Science IV have an opportunity to do on the job
training, post secondary educational training, or expand their
knowledge base through completion of CMA or a pharmacy tech
class. Students enrolled in Health Science IV will research
post-secondary educations and learn about different financial
assistance programs. Stu-dents are required to complete portfolio
this semester. Students will learn about retirement planning,
checking and savings. Students are required to meet and maintain
on-the-job training criteria and continue employment related to the
health science career and technical area. Students will complete
applications and on-site visits to three post-secondary
institutions. 1 credit. College credit available.

•HEALTH SCIENCE BIOLOGY

This course is designed for the more advanced science student who wants
an accelerated, more in-depth study of biology with a health science
focus. The concepts of laboratory equipment, scientific
measurement, and the scientific method will be stressed throughout the
year while studying the various principles of biology. Emphasis
will be placed on problem-solving processes and independent
research. Each student will be required to keep a notebook for
daily work and lab work. The class will fulfill the requirements
for 10th grade biology.

HEALTH SCIENCE ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

Completion of Biology
Grade: 11 or 12
The purpose of this course is to study the structures and functions of
vertebrates with emphasis on humans. All organs and organ systems
pertaining to human A&P will be studied in detail, including
relevant histological and pathological aspects. This class serves
as a college prep class for students enrolled the Health Science
Charter School. Additionally, students who have completed
prerequisites and have interest in the field of study may also enroll.
