This course is designed for students whose state assessments and MAP scores indicate they could benefit from a  more individualized instruction.  This course will explore numerous literary forms that are at the student's instructional level.  Students will become more familiar with the different kinds of texts using literary concepts or text features to interpret, analyze, comprehend, and respond to the texts.  Vocabulary Workshop Level D is used to expand vocabulary, improve vocabulary skills, and prepare for the vocabulary strands of standardized tests.  This course will include a review of basic grammar, usage, and sentence fluency in effective oral and written communication.  The writing process and six-trait components will be emphasized.  Students will use the five-paragraph essay as the basic foundation to develop writing skills in narrative, expository, persuasive, and technical pieces.  A basic research paper will be required.  Technology and oral communication projects will be integrated throughout the course.  MAP assessments will be administered in the fall and spring.  Formative assessments will be administered each quarter.

Prerequisite:  Students may choose to take English Composition I & II during their senior year for Dual Credit if they meet the following requirements:  (1) the student must have a "B" in English 11; (2) the student must meet G.P.A requirement; (3) the student must score an 18 on their ACT and/or take the Compass Test at LCC.  Students who qualify for the dual credit option must enroll in the semester class of 1125 Literature 12.

Reading I is a class intended to further develop the reading skills of freshmen, enabling them to be successful in high school, meet standards on state assessments, and meet the demands of a changing world.  Activities will be centered around state reading standards and improving study skills and test taking skills.  Assignments and activities will include reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension study, note taking, and novel studies.  Read-ing support will be given for content area classes.  Class size will be limited to insure student success.





1035   READING II

     Reading II is a reading class intended to further develop the reading skills of students in grades 10, 11, and 12.  Instruction will continue to develop vocabulary and reading strategies that will enable them to be successful in content area classes and on state assessments, while raising their reading levels.  Assignments ill include reading fluency, vocabulary study, comprehension activities, novel studies, and recreational reading.  Numerous pre-reading strategies as well as reading skills will be reviewed and practiced so that students become more competent readers.  Reading selections from all subject areas will be included.  Class size will be limited to insure student success.





1150 * FUNDAMENTALS OF SPEECH

A basic study in communication theory and its practical application at all levels:  intrapersonal (understanding the self), interpersonal (one-to-one relationships and small group interaction), and public speaking.  Students examine factors that influence the development of self-concept and interpersonal relationships, participate in problem solving panel discussions, deliver informative and persuasive speeches, and improve their critical listening and thinking skills.  It includes a unit on “interviewing” for jobs and scholarships.  May be taken for concurrent credit.





1533      READING FOR CREDIT

Research studies point out that students selecting a wide array of books on their own—to the point where read-ing is so interesting that students “get lost” in the books—is extremely effective in raising reading ability levels as well as increasing writing and vocabulary development.

Therefore, students will be required to read a minimum of 3 selected books [a minimum of 900 pages] (including classics, novels, science fiction, biographies, historical, poetry etc.) per quarter.  Students will meet with the teacher for book approval.  The evaluation (i.e. grade) process requires students to use critical thinking skills and creative talents.  Student presentations will be in the form of in-depth, college prep book reports. Articulating one’s ideas on paper is paramount.

This class introduces students to the debate process, as well as concentrates upon a current events topic in the form of a resolution set by the National Forensic League. Students will prepare for competitive debate by learning and practicing structured argumentation through exposure and implementation of debate theory, as well as through research, listening, speaking, critical thinking, and organizational skills.  Because this class is a co-curricular activity, some tournament travel is required.

This class will introduce students to competitive speaking, both public speaking and dramatic performance, including student congress and Lincoln–Douglas debate, and various dramatic interpretation events.  Students will learn the requirements of each event, as well as perform competitively in three different events.  Because this class is a co–curricular activity, some tournament travel is required.  This class can be taken for credit only once.





1260 *  ADVANCED FORENSICS

This class will offer advanced skills in public speaking and dramatic performance.  Students will prepare their own cutting of original works for competition and will participate in competitions that will take place outside of the classroom.  Because this is a co–curricular activity, some tournament travel is required.  This class can be taken for credit more than once.

Drama I is a class intended to expose the student to the technical side of drama as an audience member, a participant, a designer, and/or a back stage technician.  The student will become acquainted with the technical side of theater by gaining knowledge about costumes, sets, choreography, lighting, make up, writing scripts, productions as well as a project placing them in the role of the "director".  Assignments will involve note taking, guest lectures, tests, possible field trips, and lots of hand on activities. This class can be taken for credit more than once.





1311 * DRAMA II (SPRING SEMESTER ONLY)

Grade:  9, 10, 11, 12
Drama II is a class intended to expose the student to the "acting" side of drama and further develop their acting skills.  Beginning acting instruction will include pantomime, improvisation, characterizations studies, blocking, and performance.  Students will participate in many activities including monologues, duet acting, auditions and casting and a variety of productions.  A willingness to participate is a MUST for this class.  This class can be taken for credit more than once.
