The band will function as a concert organization to further the
development of group instrumental skills such as technique, intonation,
tone production through scale, chorale and rhythmic exercises and
rehearsing many styles of music literature. The band will also be
divided into small groups to experience ensemble performance.
Students can be involved in sports and band at the same time.
Students furnish their own instruments, or are required pay a $30.00
nonrefundable yearly deposit for use of any school–owned instrument.
Trips are made by the band to clinics, festivals, and state
festivals. Students are required to participate in all scheduled
performances in which the groups perform. Performances will be
scheduled in the evenings and on weekends. Failure to participate
in scheduled performances could result in a failing grade.

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12
The orchestra is open to standard orchestral string musicians (violin,
viola, cello, contrabass) and to brass, woodwind and percussive
musicians. Musicians should contact the director to see what
positions are available prior to enrollment. Students may be able
to participate in both orchestra and band by alternate day
scheduling. Musicians will further develop technical,
theoretical, and historical competencies through large group, small
ensemble, and solo opportunities. Further enrichment
opportunities may be available through clinical, state festival and
invitational performance based, learning experiences. Students
are required to participate in all scheduled orchestral performance
events. Failure to do so could result in a failing grade.
Students must furnish personal instruments or may pay a nonrefundable
$30.00 annual fee for usage of a school–owned instrument (if
available). All additional supplies (strings, rosins, oil, reeds,
etc.) are the responsibility of each individual student.

Orchestra B/Band B will share time between Orchestra and Band. Students

must be a member of the High School Band or Orchestra to be eligible
for Jazz Band.

The jazz band is dedicated to the study of jazz and its many styles as
it relates to the big bands and small combos of past and present.
Arranging and composing original works for the band is
encouraged. The skills acquired will aid the potential
professional musician. The jazz band will perform at basketball
games, festivals and other events whenever it is deemed appropriate by
the director. All performances and rehearsals are required and
unexcused absences could result in a failing grade. Jazz band
rehearses before school. Performances will be scheduled in the
evenings and on weekends. Trips are made to clinics, festivals,
and state festivals. This course may be taken for credit more than one
time. An educational trip is available in certain years.

The Parsons High School Concert Choir gives every student the
opportunity to develop and perfect his or her own particular vocal
talents. The student will learn the basic principles behind good
singing. Some of these include breathing, posture, diction, and
stylistic interpretation. The choir will sing music from the recognized
masters. Trips are made to clinics, festivals, and state festivals.
This course may be taken for credit more than one time. An

Grades 10, 11, 12
Members selected from the student body must not only be adequate
singers but also serious in their approach to ensemble singing.
They must be dedicated to the performance. Dance is an essential
element of this show choir class. Repertoire will concentrate on
lighter types of music with the format of a jazz vocal group.
However, music from all periods of music history will be included. The
Music Company gives the student an opportunity to further develop and
perfect their own outstanding and unique musical talents.
Interested string bass or electric bass, drum or guitar players should
talk with the instructor before enrolling. The purchase of a uniform
will be the responsibility of the participant. Gentlemen will be
required to purchase a tuxedo. This tuxedo may be used more than
one year. Trips are made to clinics, festivals, and state festivals.

SWEET MELODIES

Sweet Melodies is an all female show choir–style ensemble, which
includes dance. This ensemble will sing for community and
festival events. Sweet Melodies is open to 9th through 12th grade
girls. An outfit will need to be purchased for this
ensemble. Financial assistance is available to help with the purchase.
Students are required to participate in all scheduled performances in
which the groups perform. Performances will be scheduled in the
evenings and on weekends. Failure to participate in scheduled
performances could result in a failing grade. Please enroll if
you have had vocal music before and are familiar with basic choral
