Physical Science
3210/3211 GENERAL SCIENCE
Y
Prerequisite: None
    Grade: 9 Required
This course is designed to introduce the basic concepts of chemistry and physics.  Concepts such as laboratory equipment, scientific measurement, and scientific method will be emphasized throughout the year.  Teaching techniques will include lecture and note taking, lab activities, teacher demonstrations and cooperative learning.
The student will have experiences in making observations, basic laboratory skills and analysis of experimental data.  Emphasis will be placed on writing chemical formulas and chemical equations, problem solving, application of Newton's Law of Motion and the uses of energy in nature.  The student will be required to keep a notebook for daily work and lab work.  The class will meet the 9th grade science requirement.

3220/3221  •  HONORS GENERAL SCIENCE
Y
Prerequisite:  Students must apply to enroll. Application process will include:  (1) completed application form, (2) written paragraph explaining reason to take this course (3) written permission of class instructor or the department chair and (4) completion of or current enrollment in Algebra 1.
Grade: 9
This course is designed for the more advanced science student who wants an accelerated, more in-depth study of general science.  The concepts of laboratory equipment, scientific measurement and the scientific method will be stressed throughout the year while studying the various principles of chemistry and physics.  Emphasis will be placed on problem solving processes and independent research.  Each student will be required to keep a notebook for daily work and lab work.  The class will fulfill the requirements for 9th grade science.

3240 EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE
Y
Prerequisite: Completion of  Biology.
Grade: 11-12
This course is designed to study Planet Earth’s place in the Solar System and the Galaxy.  The atmosphere, surface, and core of the Earth and its moon are also studied.  Comets, asteroids, black holes, supernovae, rocks and volcanoes will be topics of study and discussion.  Field trips to local observatories and/or the Kansas Cosmosphere are possible depending on time and funds available.

3300 ADVANCED PHYSICAL SCIENCE
Y
Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra I and Biology
    Grade: 11, 12
This course is designed to provide more science training for college–bound upper–class students who do not wish to take chemistry and/or physics. The first semester is an introduction to the basic principles of chemistry such as writing formulas, naming compounds, and how chemicals are used in everyday life. The second semester is an introduction to the basic principles of physics such as force and motion, heat, sound, light and electricity.  Students who have had Chemistry may not enroll in this class.

3310/3311 CHEMISTRY
Y
Prerequisite: Algebra I with a grade of “C” or better and completion of Biology
Grade: 11 or 12
This course is based on book study and laboratory experimentation with an emphasis on problem solving and theory as a preparation for further study in Chemistry at the college level.  Basic study of matter, its composition, and the changes matter undergoes are included in units of study such as (1) the structure of the atom, (2) the periodic table, (3) chemical bonding, (4) writing formulas and equations, (5) kinetic theory, (6) stoichiometry, (7) solutions and equilibrium, (8) the gas laws, and (9) acids and bases.

3320 •  HONORS CHEMISTRY
Y
Prerequisite: Algebra II with a grade of "B" or better and completion of Biology
Permission of the instructor and a completed application form is required.
Grade: 11 or 12
Students enrolling in Honors Chemistry should have completed Honors General Science and Honors Biology.  Honors Chemistry will be an accelerated, in-depth study of the chemical principles studied in Chemistry with added independent study of other principles.  This course is recommended for students wishing to have a college major in fields of science, engineering, math or medicine.

3250/3251  •  PHYSICS
Y
Prerequisite: Algebra II
Grade: 12
The major emphasis in the course is based on the applications of principles to solve problems with most of the time devoted to the fields of mechanics, heat, light, and electricity.  Recommended for college–bound students majoring in math, science, medicine, music education, agronomy, and food science.

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE
3500/3501   BIOLOGY
Y
Prerequisite: Students wanting to enroll in General Biology must pass at least one semester of General Science.
Grade: 10 required
This course is designed to introduce students to the chemical and structural basis of life and the conditions necessary to maintain life.  Students will work in the areas of cytology, genetics, microbiology, zoology and botany.  The course includes the interaction and importance of the relationship between man and the other life forms.  Concepts such as laboratory equipment, scientific measurement and scientific method will be emphasized throughout the year.  Teaching techniques will include class discussions, note talking, lab activities, teacher demonstrations and cooperative learning.  Lab work will include using the microscope and dissection.  Each student will be required to keep a notebook for daily work and lab work.

3510 •  HONORS BIOLOGY
Y
Prerequisite: Completion of application process and permission of the instructor.
Grade: 10
This course is designed for the more advanced science student who wants an accelerated, more in-depth study of biology.  The concepts of laboratory equipment, scientific measurement, and the scientific method will be stressed throughout the year while studying the various principles of biology.  Emphasis will be placed on problem-solving processes and independent research.  Each student will be required to keep a notebook for daily work and lab work.  The class will fulfill the requirements for 10th grade biology.

3610    ADVANCED BIOLOGY I
S
Prerequisite:   Students must have received at least a 'C' in both semesters of Biology.
Grade: 11, 12
This course is designed to cover standards and techniques not taught in General Biology, offer advanced study in the biological sciences, and emphasize classification, identification, and collection techniques of various species of flora and fauna.  Collections will be required.  Responses to current event articles will be required through the course of the semester.

3630    ADVANCED BIOLOGY II
S
Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Advanced Biology .I
Grade:  11, 12
This course covers standards and techniques, not taught in General Biology and is a continuation of Advanced Biology I.  The course will focus on theory of such topics as speciation, conservation, and general ecology.  In addition a mammalian anatomy and physiology module will be covered.  All students will be required to address various theories in an evaluative format and make a class presentation as to their respective findings.
